Accounting for 18% of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), agriculture is one of the most important sectors providing employment to over 50% of the country’s workforce. While the government is undertaking macro measures to uplift the sector, there are several initiatives being launched at the ground level too. Over the last few years, leveraging on the power of aggregation and collectivisation, Farmer Collectives have become a most sought-after institutional structure for bringing the farmers together, to represent themselves in the market. FPOs can leverage the strength of collectivisation to facilitate farmers with ample number of opportunities to become a key stakeholder in the Value chain.

Although FPOs are still nascent, they have come a long way in the past several years and are fast becoming a critical component of the agricultural value chain in India. The Economic Times, in collaboration with Grant Thornton Bharat as Knowledge Partner, organised the 2nd Edition of “The Economic Times – Farmer Producer Organisation Summit & Awards 2021”. This conference was designed to felicitate FPOs’ successes, strengths, and excellence. The virtual event brought together agri-business leaders, industry experts and delegates from the Government of India for engaging panel discussions to understand what more can be done, and how to create solutions which will work for the FPOs, Agri-ecosystem and the environment.
