With the recent notification issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), India has introduced a new Quality Control Order (QCO) for aluminium and aluminium alloy products amid a sharp rise in imports.
The order mandates compliance with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms for a wide range of products across construction, packaging, electrical and engineering applications. This follows a significant increase in aluminium imports, rising over 20% in FY25, and seeks to standardise quality, regulate inflows and strengthen domestic manufacturing competitiveness.
At Grant Thornton Bharat, we assist manufacturers, brands and importers in navigating QCO and BIS requirements across the compliance lifecycle. We provide expert guidance on identifying applicable Indian Standards, framing or amending IS and QCO, and mapping products to regulatory requirements. Our teams manage application filing, factory audit readiness, laboratory testing and coordination with BIS and line ministries to resolve issues and meet timelines. Post licensing, we support mapping, consignment reporting, inspection and testing set-up and renewals. With strong expertise and industry relationships, we help manage compliance risks, maintain market access and strengthen supply chain resilience.
