A growing economic partnership
Bilateral merchandise trade between India and Japan has almost doubled over the past decade, rising from USD 13.60 billion in FY2016-17 to USD 27.48 billion in FY2025-26. Japan is an important source of advanced machinery, capital goods, electrical equipment and technology-intensive industrial inputs for India, while Indian exports to Japan are more diversified, spanning vehicles and components, machinery, chemicals and marine products. However, there is significant scope to expand the relationship, as India accounts for less than 2% of Japan's total trade and Japan accounts for just over 2% of India's.
The India–Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), in force since 2011, established a formal framework for cooperation in trade, services, intellectual property, customs and the movement of people.
Building on this foundation, the India–Japan Joint Vision for the Next Decade, adopted in August 2025 and advanced through the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit in July 2026, provides a roadmap for strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.
The Summit recorded approximately USD 12.5 billion in private-sector investment commitments and numerous cooperation projects across priority sectors. All these initiatives are expected to deepen collaboration in semiconductors, batteries, pharmaceuticals, energy, mobility, financial services and digital technologies.
