The consumer and retail sector saw investors become more selective in Q3 2026, with capital favouring differentiated brands, category leaders and scalable business models. Public markets emerged as an important funding avenue, while premiumisation remained a key investment theme across consumer segments. The Q3 2026 edition of the Consumer and Retail Dealtracker analyses deal activity across M&A, private equity, venture capital and public markets, and highlights the trends influencing investment decisions across the sector.

Key insights from the Consumer and Retail Dealtracker Q3 2026

Q3 2026 saw 127 deals valued at USD 1.9 billion. Public markets took centre stage, with IPOs and QIPs accounting for 51% of total deal value, exceeding the combined value of M&A and PE deals. Investor interest remained focused on branded consumer businesses, particularly in jewellery, apparel and lifestyle.

M&A activity remained robust during the first nine months of 2026, with 88 deals recorded, the highest level for the corresponding nine-month period since 2019 and equivalent to the volume recorded in full year 2024. Q3 2026 recorded 29 deals valued at USD 229 million. Activity gathered pace towards the end of the quarter, with September alone recording 14 deals, the highest monthly count since February 2026.

PE/VC volumes increased by 11% Q-o-Q to 84 deals worth USD 719 million, reflecting sustained investor interest in consumer brands across the personal care, e-commerce, and retail technology segments. While early-stage investments drove volumes, larger growth-stage and pre-IPO transactions supported deal values.

Public market activity gained momentum in Q3 2026, contributing over half of the total disclosed deal value and highlighting improved access to growth capital for consumer and retail businesses.

India’s consumption story continues to attract investor interest, but capital is increasingly directed towards businesses with differentiated brands, strong category positioning and the ability to scale profitably. The activity across jewellery, apparel and lifestyle reflects changing consumer aspirations and premiumisation, while the growing contribution of public markets highlights the expanding funding options available to established consumer businesses. As demand patterns evolve, the ability to build lasting consumer relationships and sustain growth will be critical to creating long-term value.

In Q3 2026, investors became increasingly selective, favouring category leaders and differentiated brands with strong fundamentals, scalable operating models and a clear path to profitable growth. The breadth of activity also points to investors’ preference for businesses with proven execution capabilities and the ability to strengthen their position as markets scale. As the sector matures, M&A and growth capital are likely to support category expansion, portfolio strengthening and the pursuit of leadership positions in high-growth segments.
