CARE beyond policies, beyond promises

How Aakash found strength in knowing he didn't have to face life's toughest chapter alone
Just over a year ago, Aakash Singh, Assistant Manager, Assurance joined Grant Thornton Bharat as a Consultant, excited to begin a new chapter in his career. But only a month later, before he had even completed his first project, he was diagnosed with throat cancer. What followed was one of the most challenging periods of his life, marked by treatment, surgery and recovery. His story is a powerful reminder that CARE is more than a value at Grant Thornton Bharat. It's reflected in the way we show up for our people, especially when they need us most.
Like anyone starting a new role, Aakash was looking forward to learning, growing and making his mark. But just a month into his journey, before he had even completed his first project, life took an unexpected turn.
He was diagnosed with throat cancer. In an instant, his priorities shifted. Work took a back seat as he focused on consultations, treatment, surgery and recovery. Along with the uncertainty of his diagnosis came questions about what this would mean for his future and his career at a firm he had only recently joined.
It was overwhelming. My focus shifted from work to treatment and recovery. Naturally, I couldn't help but wonder what this would mean for my career.
During one of the most difficult periods of his life, Aakash discovered the true meaning of support. As he focused on his health, the Firm remained firmly by his side. His salary continued without interruption. He received his bonus, and the Firm's medical insurance covered the surgery that ultimately saved his life.
But what stayed with him most wasn't the financial support. It was the understanding. The empathy. The reassurance. The knowledge that he wasn't expected to navigate this journey alone.
At a time when everything felt uncertain, I was met with compassion and support. It allowed me to focus on what mattered most, getting better.
It's often during life's most challenging moments that culture reveals itself most clearly. For Aakash, CARE was not something written on a wall or spoken about in a meeting. It was reflected in every conversation, every gesture of understanding and every moment of encouragement he received along the way.
Whether through leaders who showed empathy, colleagues who checked in on him, or a workplace that put his wellbeing first, he felt supported throughout his recovery journey.
In those moments, CARE became more than a value. It became an experience.
Today, Aakash is cancer-free and back at work. While he is grateful for the treatment that helped him recover, what he remembers most is the people who stood beside him through it all. The colleagues who cared. The leaders who understood. The culture that never made him feel alone.
Looking back, he doesn't just remember the challenge he overcame. He remembers the support that helped him overcome it.
At Grant Thornton Bharat, we believe that caring for our people means more than offering support when things are going well. It means standing beside them through life's unexpected moments, with empathy, understanding and action.
For Aakash, that's exactly what happened.
CARE isn't something I've read about here. It's something I've experienced.
